How to get support as a family caregiver

If you care for a veteran, the VA can support you too. Help ranges from classes and support groups to a monthly payment for some caregivers.

What you may need

  • The veteran’s VA health care information
  • Details about the daily care you give

Steps

  1. Step 1: Call the Caregiver Support Line

Trained staff can answer questions, listen, and connect you to your local Caregiver Support Team. It is free.

  2. Step 2: Know the 2 programs

The general support program is open to caregivers of veterans of any era. The comprehensive program offers more help, including a monthly payment, for caregivers of veterans with serious service-connected needs.

  3. Step 3: Apply for the comprehensive program

The veteran and caregiver apply together with VA Form 10-10CG. The VA will check the veteran’s care needs.

  4. Step 4: Take care of yourself

Ask about respite care, which gives you a break while someone else cares for the veteran.
