Family, caregivers, and survivors
How CHAMPVA health coverage works for families
CHAMPVA is a health care program that helps pay medical costs for some spouses, surviving spouses, and children of veterans.
What you may need
- The veteran’s VA rating letter or death certificate
- Your marriage or birth certificate
- Any other health insurance cards
Steps
Step 1: Check if you may qualify
You may qualify if the veteran is rated permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected condition, or died from one. You cannot be eligible for TRICARE.
Step 2: Apply
Use VA Form 10-10d. Send copies of the papers it asks for.
Step 3: Use any doctor who accepts CHAMPVA
You do not have to go to the VA. Many doctors accept CHAMPVA. Ask the office before your visit.
Step 4: Know how costs work
There is a yearly deductible and you pay a share of costs. If you have other insurance, it usually pays first.
