How to ask for a discharge upgrade

If you think your discharge was unfair or wrong, you can ask the military to change it. Even without an upgrade, you may still get some VA benefits.

What you may need

  • Your DD214
  • Your service and medical records, if you have them
  • Statements from people who knew you in service (optional)

Steps

  1. Step 1: Find the right board

Each branch has a Discharge Review Board and a Board for Correction of Military or Naval Records. Which one you use depends on how long ago you left and what you want changed.

  2. Step 2: Use the VA step-by-step tool

VA.gov has a free tool. Answer a few questions and it tells you which board and form to use.

  3. Step 3: Explain your reasons

Boards must give special consideration if PTSD, a brain injury, or sexual assault or harassment played a role. Say so if it applies to you.

  4. Step 4: Ask the VA about benefits now

The VA can do its own review, called a character of discharge review. You may qualify for some health care or benefits while you wait.

Many law schools and nonprofits help with upgrades for free. Ask a VSO for a referral.
