How to get VA help for alcohol or drug use

The VA treats problems with alcohol, drugs, prescription medicines, and tobacco. Help can start the same day.

What you may need

  • Your DD214 or other discharge papers, if you are not enrolled yet
  • A list of what you use and how often, if you can

Steps

  1. Step 1: In a crisis or overdose, get help now

For an overdose, call 911. If you are in crisis, call 988 and press 1, or text 838255. You can also walk in to any VA medical center, day or night. The VA says your discharge status and enrollment do not matter for this.

  2. Step 2: Apply for VA health care

To get ongoing treatment, apply for VA health care online, by phone, or in person. If you have an other-than-honorable discharge, you may still get mental health care in some cases. Ask the VA.

  3. Step 3: Ask for a screening and a referral

Tell your VA primary care provider you want help with drinking or drug use. No provider yet? Call the VA mental health line at 877-222-8387, use the VA program finder, or call your local VA medical center. The VA offers same-day help.

  4. Step 4: Pick the kind of care that fits

Options include medical detox, outpatient counseling, intensive outpatient programs, live-in rehab, family counseling, and relapse prevention. The VA also offers medicines for opioid and alcohol use disorders.

  5. Step 5: Ask about free naloxone

Naloxone (Narcan) reverses an opioid overdose. Ask your VA provider for it. It is free, and the VA can teach you and your family how to use it.

Many eligible veterans pay nothing for their first 3 outpatient mental health visits each year (through December 29, 2027). Vet Center counseling is always free.
