How to apply for VA pension

VA pension is a monthly payment for wartime veterans with limited income and savings. You do not need a service-connected disability.

What you may need

  • Your DD214
  • Your income and savings information
  • Your medical expenses, like insurance premiums or care costs

Steps

  1. Step 1: Check the basic rules

You must have served during a wartime period and meet income and net worth limits. You must also be 65 or older, or have a permanent and total disability, or live in a nursing home, or get certain Social Security benefits.

  2. Step 2: Gather your papers

You will need your income, savings, and medical costs. Medical costs you pay can lower your countable income.

  3. Step 3: Fill out the form

The form is VA Form 21P-527EZ. Apply online, by mail, or with a free VSO.

  4. Step 4: Report changes

Once approved, tell the VA if your income, savings, or family changes. This helps you avoid a debt later.

Be careful of anyone who wants to sell you a product so you "qualify" for pension. See our guide on avoiding scams.
