How to get free help with your taxes

You can get your taxes done for free through IRS-backed programs. Many veterans also do not know that VA disability pay is not taxed.

What you may need

  • A photo ID
  • Social Security cards for you and your family
  • Your W-2s, 1099s, and last year’s tax return

Steps

  1. Step 1: Know what is not taxed

VA disability pay and VA pension are not taxed by the IRS. You do not need to list them as income on your federal return.

  2. Step 2: Use VITA for free tax prep

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites do free taxes for people with low to moderate income, people with disabilities, and others.

  3. Step 3: Age 60 or older? Try TCE

TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly) gives free tax help with a focus on retirement and pension questions.

  4. Step 4: Recently separated? Try MilTax

MilTax from Military OneSource offers free tax software and help for service members and for veterans up to 365 days after leaving service.

Many states give veterans extra tax breaks, like on property taxes. Ask your state veterans office.
