What to do if you owe the VA money

The VA can create a debt if it paid you too much, or if you have unpaid copays. You have options, and acting early helps.

What you may need

  • Your debt letter from the VA
  • A list of your monthly income and bills

Steps

  1. Step 1: Read the letter closely

It explains why you owe and lists deadlines. Benefit debts and health care copay debts are handled by different offices.

  2. Step 2: Ask for a payment plan

You can ask to pay a little each month. This can stop the VA from taking your full payment.

  3. Step 3: Ask for a waiver if paying would hurt you

A waiver asks the VA to forgive the debt. You must show that paying would cause hardship. There are time limits, so do not wait.

  4. Step 4: Dispute it if you think it is wrong

You can say you do not believe you owe the money. A free VSO can help you write this.

Do not ignore a VA debt letter. The VA may take money from future payments or tax refunds if you do not respond.
