Where to find emergency money help
A car repair, a big bill, or a job loss can put you in a tight spot. Several trusted groups give one-time grants to veterans and their families.
What you may need
- The bill you need help with
- Proof of service, like a DD214
- Proof of income
Steps
Step 1: Housing bills? Call SSVF first
If the problem is rent or utilities and you may lose your home, SSVF may help. Call the homeless veterans line.
Step 2: Ask your state or county veterans office
Many have small emergency funds for veterans. Rules and amounts vary.
Step 3: Try the VFW Unmet Needs program
The VFW gives grants to help pay basic bills like rent, utilities, and car payments for some service members and veterans. The money goes straight to the company you owe.
Step 4: Call 211
211 is a free line that connects you to local help with bills, food, and housing. It is open in most of the country.
Be wary of fast loans that charge high fees. Real grant programs do not ask you to pay to apply.
