How to find free legal help

Legal problems like evictions, debts, child support, or old warrants can block you from housing and jobs. Free legal help is out there.

What you may need

  • Any court papers or letters
  • Your DD214
  • Proof of income, for free legal aid

Steps

  1. Step 1: Ask about free legal clinics at the VA

Many VA medical centers host free legal clinics run by partner groups. Ask your VA social worker.

  2. Step 2: Contact your local legal aid office

Legal aid offices help people with low income for free. Use the Legal Services Corporation finder.

  3. Step 3: Involved with the courts? Ask for a VJO Specialist

Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) Specialists help veterans in the justice system, including veterans treatment courts.

  4. Step 4: Know VA claims help is separate

For VA claims and appeals, use a free accredited VSO instead. See our guide on finding free help.
