How to apply for Individual Unemployability (TDIU)

If your service-connected conditions keep you from holding a steady job, the VA may pay you at the 100% rate, even if your rating is lower.

What you may need

  • Your VA rating letter
  • Your work history for the last 5 years
  • Medical records showing how your conditions affect work

Steps

  1. Step 1: Check the usual rating rules

Most often, you need one condition rated 60% or more, or a combined rating of 70% with one condition at 40% or more. The VA can make exceptions.

  2. Step 2: Fill out the form

The form is VA Form 21-8940. It asks about your work and school history.

  3. Step 3: Your past employers get a form

The VA may send VA Form 21-4192 to your recent employers to confirm your work.

  4. Step 4: Get free help

TDIU claims can be complex. A Veterans Service Officer can help you build a strong claim for free.

Some part-time or protected work may still be allowed. Ask your VSO before turning down any job.
