How to get ready for your C&P exam

After you file a claim, the VA may ask you to a C&P exam (Compensation and Pension exam). It is one of the most important parts of your claim.

What you may need

  • Your exam letter or call details
  • A short list of your symptoms and how they affect your day
  • A list of your medicines

Steps

  1. Step 1: Make sure the exam is real

Exams may be at the VA or with a company the VA hires. If you are not sure a call is real, call the VA to check before you share personal details.

  2. Step 2: Write down your symptoms

Note how often they happen and how bad they get. Describe your worst days, not just good days. Be honest.

  3. Step 3: Show up on time

Missing the exam can lead to a denial. If you cannot go, call right away to reschedule.

  4. Step 4: Explain how it affects your life

Tell the examiner how your condition affects work, sleep, chores, and family life. They may not ask, so speak up.

  5. Step 5: You can bring someone

You may bring a family member or friend to help you remember things. Ask ahead if they can come into the room.

The examiner does not decide your claim. They write a report. The VA decides based on all your evidence.
