How to file a VA disability claim
What you may need
- Your DD214 or other discharge papers
- Any medical records about your condition (VA or private doctors)
- Names of doctors or clinics who treated you
Steps
Step 1: Get free help first (optional, but smart)
A Veterans Service Officer (VSO) is a trained helper approved by the VA. They help you file for free. Never pay someone just to file a claim.
Step 2: Send an "Intent to File"
This tells the VA you plan to file. It can protect an earlier start date for your payments while you gather papers. You then have up to 1 year to file the full claim.
Step 3: Fill out the claim form
The form is VA Form 21-526EZ. You can file online at VA.gov, by mail, in person at a VA regional office, or with your VSO.
Step 4: Go to your exam
The VA may ask you to a C&P exam (Compensation and Pension exam). A doctor checks your condition. Go to this exam. Missing it can hurt your claim.
Step 5: Watch for your decision letter
You can check your claim status on VA.gov or by phone. Your letter will say if your condition is service connected and your disability rating.
If you disagree with the decision, you can ask for a review. See the guide on appealing a denied claim.
