How to apply for VA health care

VA health care covers checkups, specialists, mental health care, prescriptions, and more.

What you may need

  • Your DD214 or other discharge papers
  • Any health insurance cards you have
  • Your income from last year (for some veterans)

Steps

  1. Step 1: Check if you may qualify

Many veterans qualify. Rules depend on your service, your discharge, and sometimes your income. Recent laws, like the PACT Act, made more veterans eligible.

  2. Step 2: Fill out the application

The form is VA Form 10-10EZ. Apply online at VA.gov, by phone, by mail, or in person at a VA medical center.

  3. Step 3: Wait for the VA to contact you

The VA will send you a letter with a decision. Wait times change, so call if you have not heard back.

  4. Step 4: Make your first appointment

Once you are enrolled, call your local VA clinic to set up a first visit with a primary care provider.
