How VA health care costs work: priority groups and copays

When you enroll, the VA puts you in a priority group from 1 to 8. Your group decides whether you pay copays. Many veterans pay nothing.

What you may need

  • Your VA enrollment letter
  • Your household income from last year
  • Any copay bills you received

Steps

  1. Step 1: Find your priority group

Your enrollment letter lists it. Group 1 is for veterans with high disability ratings. Higher numbers usually mean more copays. You can also call to ask.

  2. Step 2: Know what is free

Care for service-connected conditions is free. Some care is free for everyone, like care for military sexual trauma and some toxic exposure screenings.

  3. Step 3: Update your income if it dropped

If your income went down, tell the VA with VA Form 10-10EZR. You may move to a group with lower or no copays.

  4. Step 4: Get help with a bill you cannot pay

Call the VA Health Resource Center. Ask about a payment plan, a waiver, or a hardship request. Do not ignore the bill.

If you have other insurance, like Medicare or a job plan, the VA may bill it for care that is not service connected. This does not cost you extra.
