How to get a ride to your VA appointment
No car? You still have options. The VA and partner groups like the DAV offer free rides to VA medical appointments in many areas.
What you may need
- Your appointment date, time, and place
- Your phone number
- A few days’ notice, if possible
Steps
Step 1: Call your VA medical center first
Ask for the travel office or the Veterans Transportation Service. Many VA centers have their own vans or shuttles.
Step 2: Ask about the DAV Transportation Network
The DAV (Disabled American Veterans) has volunteer drivers who give free rides to VA medical visits. You do not need to be a DAV member.
Step 3: Book early
Rides are first come, first served. Call as soon as you know your appointment date. Ask what time you will be picked up.
Step 4: Ask about travel pay too
If a family member or friend drives you, you may still get money back for the miles. See our guide on travel pay.
Ask your VA care team if a video visit is an option. It can save you a trip.
