How to get paid back for travel to VA appointments
Many veterans can get money back for miles driven, or for other travel costs, to VA or approved community care visits. This is called travel pay.
What you may need
- The date and place of your appointment
- Your bank account set up for VA direct deposit
- Receipts for parking or tolls, if any
Steps
Step 1: Check if you qualify
You may qualify if you have a disability rating of 30% or more, travel for a service-connected condition, get VA pension, or have low income. There are other ways to qualify too.
Step 2: File within 30 days
You must file within 30 days of your appointment. Do not wait.
Step 3: File online or at the clinic
File on VA.gov or the VA Health and Benefits app. You can also file at your VA medical center’s travel office.
Step 4: Get paid by direct deposit
The VA pays by direct deposit. A small deductible may be taken out unless you are exempt.
If you need a special ride, like a wheelchair van, ask your VA care team before the trip. It may need approval first.
