How to spot and avoid scams that target veterans

Scammers know veterans get monthly payments. They pretend to be the VA, a helper, or a charity. A few simple rules keep your money and identity safe.

What you may need

  • Nothing. Just these warning signs.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Know the warning signs

Be careful if someone rushes you, asks for a fee to file a claim, promises a higher rating, or asks for your VA.gov password. The real VA will not do these things.

  2. Step 2: Watch for "claim sharks"

Some companies charge thousands of dollars to "help" with claims. They are not accredited. Free, accredited help is always available.

  3. Step 3: Watch for "pension poaching"

Some sellers tell older veterans to move savings into special products to qualify for VA pension. This can cost you money and benefits. Talk to a VSO first.

  4. Step 4: Hang up and call back

If a call or text says it is from the VA, hang up. Call the VA yourself using a number from VA.gov.

  5. Step 5: Report it

Call VSAFE (Veterans Scam and Fraud Evasion) to report a scam and get help. If you lost money, also tell your bank right away.

Never share your Social Security number, bank details, or VA.gov sign-in with someone who called you.
