How to find free, trusted help with VA paperwork

You do not have to fill out VA forms alone. The VA trains and approves people who can help you for free. Here is how to find them and check that they are real.

What you may need

  • Your ZIP code
  • Any VA letters you have received
  • Your DD214, if you have it

Steps

  1. Step 1: Know who can help

There are 3 kinds of VA-accredited helpers. Veterans Service Officers (VSOs) work for groups like the DAV, American Legion, or VFW, or for your county or state. Claims agents and attorneys are also accredited.

  2. Step 2: Look them up on the VA website

Use the VA accreditation search to check a person by name. If they are not listed, they are not allowed to help you with a VA claim.

  3. Step 3: Know what is free

VSOs never charge. Agents and attorneys cannot charge you to file your first claim. They may only charge for some work after the VA makes a decision.

  4. Step 4: Pick one and sign the form

To let a helper act for you, you sign a form. For a VSO, it is VA Form 21-22. For an agent or attorney, it is VA Form 21-22a.

If someone asks you to pay a fee to file your first claim, or to "guarantee" a rating, walk away. That is not allowed.
