How to use your state and county veterans office

Besides the VA, every state has a veterans office, and many counties do too. They give free help and offer state benefits the VA does not.

What you may need

  • Your county and state
  • Your DD214
  • Your VA letters, if you have any

Steps

  1. Step 1: Find your county veterans office

Many counties have a County Veteran Service Officer (CVSO). They help you file VA claims for free and know local programs well.

  2. Step 2: Find your state veterans office

Your state veterans department runs state benefits. These can include property tax breaks, free or cheaper license plates, state veteran homes, and school help.

  3. Step 3: Ask what you qualify for

Ask, "What state and local benefits can I get?" Many programs are not widely known. Some need your VA rating letter.

  4. Step 4: Ask about emergency funds

Some states and counties have small emergency funds for veterans. They may help with rent, utilities, or car repairs. Rules vary.

State benefits often need proof of your VA rating. See our guide on how to download your VA benefit letter.
