How to check your claim or appeal status

Claims can take months. You can check where yours is at any time, and send more papers if the VA asks for them.

What you may need

  • Your VA.gov sign-in, or your Social Security number for a phone call

Steps

  1. Step 1: Check online

Sign in to VA.gov and go to "Check your claim or appeal status." It shows each step and any requests for more evidence.

  2. Step 2: Or call

Call the VA benefits line. Have your Social Security number or VA file number ready.

  3. Step 3: Answer evidence requests fast

If the VA asks for papers, send them as soon as you can. You can upload files on VA.gov.

  4. Step 4: Ask your VSO

If you have a VSO, they can see your claim too and explain what each step means.

A claim moving back a step is common. It often means the VA needs one more thing, not that you were denied.
