How to see a doctor outside the VA (community care)

Sometimes the VA can pay for care from a doctor near you who is not at the VA. This is called community care. In most cases, you need VA approval first.

What you may need

  • To be enrolled in VA health care
  • The name of the care you need
  • Your home address (to check drive times)

Steps

  1. Step 1: Ask your VA provider

Tell your VA care team you would like community care. They check if you are eligible and set up a referral.

  2. Step 2: Know common reasons you may qualify

You may qualify if the VA cannot offer the care you need, if the drive to VA is too long, or if the wait is too long. Your provider may also decide it is best for you.

  3. Step 3: Wait for approval before you go

Do not book with an outside doctor until the VA approves it. If you go without approval, you may have to pay.

  4. Step 4: Urgent care and emergencies are different

You can use an in-network urgent care clinic without approval if you qualify. In an emergency, go to the nearest ER. The VA should be told within 72 hours.

Ask for your referral number and keep it handy. The outside doctor’s office will need it.
