How veterans’ preference works for federal jobs
Many veterans get extra points or priority when applying for federal government jobs. This is called veterans’ preference.
What you may need
- Your DD214 (the copy that shows your type of discharge)
- Your VA rating letter, if you have a disability
Steps
Step 1: Find out if you qualify
Preference depends on when and where you served, your discharge, and whether you have a service-connected disability.
Step 2: Know the 2 main types
5-point preference is for many veterans who served during certain times. 10-point preference is mostly for veterans with a service-connected disability.
Step 3: Claim it when you apply
Apply on USAJOBS. Upload your DD214. For 10-point preference, also send form SF-15 and your VA letter.
Step 4: Use special hiring paths
Some agencies can hire veterans directly through special programs. Read each job posting for "veterans" hiring options.
