How to use your GI Bill

The GI Bill can pay for college, trade school, apprenticeships, and job training. The Post-9/11 GI Bill may also pay for housing and books.

What you may need

  • Your DD214
  • The name of the school or program you want
  • Your bank information for direct deposit

Steps

  1. Step 1: Compare schools and programs

Use the VA GI Bill Comparison Tool. It shows what each school costs and how much the GI Bill will pay.

  2. Step 2: Apply for benefits

Apply on VA.gov. The VA will mail you a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) that shows how much benefit you have.

  3. Step 3: Talk to the school’s certifying official

Every approved school has a staff member who handles GI Bill paperwork. Give them your COE.

  4. Step 4: Confirm your classes each month

Some students must confirm they are still enrolled to keep getting housing payments. Watch for VA messages.

Some service members can share their GI Bill with a spouse or child. This must be set up while still serving.
