How to apply for Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E)

VR&E helps veterans with a service-connected disability get ready for, find, and keep a job. It can pay for school or training too.

What you may need

  • Your VA disability rating letter
  • Your DD214
  • Your work and school history

Steps

  1. Step 1: Check if you may qualify

Most veterans need a discharge that is not dishonorable and a VA disability rating of at least 10%. Some service members can apply before they leave.

  2. Step 2: Apply

The form is VA Form 28-1900. Apply online at VA.gov, by mail, or at a VA regional office.

  3. Step 3: Meet your counselor

A Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor (VRC) meets with you to learn about your skills, interests, and limits.

  4. Step 4: Make a plan together

Your plan may include training, college, help starting a business, or help finding a job right away.

VR&E can sometimes pay a monthly allowance while you are in training.
