Housing and food
How to get food help
No one should go hungry. Veterans can use SNAP, food banks, and help from the VA. Using food help does not affect your VA benefits.
What you may need
- Your ZIP code
- Proof of income, for SNAP
- An ID, for some food banks
Steps
Step 1: Apply for SNAP
SNAP gives you money each month for groceries on a card. Apply through your state SNAP office. Veterans apply the same way as anyone else.
Step 2: Find a food bank near you
Food banks and pantries give free groceries. Use the Feeding America food bank finder, or call 211.
Step 3: Tell your VA care team
The VA asks about food during visits. Tell them if you are struggling. A VA social worker can connect you to local help. Some VA centers have food pantries.
Step 4: Help for older veterans
If you are 60 or older, ask about home-delivered meals, like Meals on Wheels, through the Eldercare Locator.
If you have young children, WIC may also help with healthy food.
