How Grant and Per Diem (GPD) transitional housing works

GPD gives VA grants to community groups that offer short-term housing and support for veterans who are homeless, while they work toward a permanent home.

What you may need

  • Your DD214, if you have it
  • Any ID you have

Steps

  1. Step 1: Ask the VA homeless team for a referral

Most GPD programs take referrals from your local VA homeless team. Call the homeless veterans line to get started.

  2. Step 2: Know what to expect

GPD programs offer a bed in a supportive setting. Many offer help with jobs, health care, and saving money.

  3. Step 3: Ask about the type of program

Some focus on recovery, some on work, and some on women or veterans with families. Ask which one fits you.

  4. Step 4: Make a plan for your next home

Staff help you work toward a permanent place to live, often with help from SSVF or HUD-VASH.
