What to do if you are homeless or about to lose your home

If you have no safe place to stay tonight, or you may lose your home soon, the VA has a 24/7 line and local teams that can help fast.

What you may need

  • A phone. Nothing else is needed to call.
  • Your DD214, if you have it (not required to call)

Steps

  1. Step 1: Call the homeless veterans line

Call 877-424-3838, any time, day or night. A trained counselor will connect you with your local VA homeless team.

  2. Step 2: Or walk into a VA medical center

Ask for the homeless program or a social worker. You can also go to a Community Resource and Referral Center (CRRC) if there is one near you.

  3. Step 3: Tell them what you need right now

Say if you need a place tonight, food, or medical care. Be honest about your situation so they can match you with the right help.

  4. Step 4: Ask about all housing programs

Ask about SSVF, Grant and Per Diem (GPD), and HUD-VASH. Each one helps in a different way. We have a guide for each.

Some programs can help even if your discharge was not honorable. Always ask.
