How to get a HUD-VASH housing voucher

HUD-VASH combines a rent voucher from HUD with a VA case manager. It helps veterans who are homeless move into a stable home and stay there.

What you may need

  • To be eligible for VA health care
  • Your DD214 or other proof of service
  • Any ID and income papers

Steps

  1. Step 1: Start with the VA, not the housing office

HUD-VASH vouchers come through a VA referral. Ask your VA homeless team or social worker about HUD-VASH.

  2. Step 2: Meet with a VA case manager

The case manager checks if you qualify and helps you apply to your local public housing agency.

  3. Step 3: Find a place to rent

The voucher pays part of your rent to a landlord who accepts it. Your case manager can help you look.

  4. Step 4: Keep working with your case manager

You will keep getting support to stay housed and connect with health care and other services.
