How to get help with home repairs and accessibility changes

The VA offers grants to make a home safer for veterans with disabilities. Trusted nonprofits, often funded by companies like The Home Depot Foundation, also help with repairs.

What you may need

  • Your VA rating letter, for VA grants
  • Proof that you own or will own the home
  • A list of repairs or changes you need

Steps

  1. Step 1: VA housing grants for serious disabilities

The Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) and Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grants help pay to build or change a home. They are for certain service-connected disabilities.

  2. Step 2: HISA grant through VA health care

The HISA grant (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations) can pay for medically needed changes, like a ramp or walk-in shower. Ask your VA provider.

  3. Step 3: Habitat for Humanity Veterans Build

Local Habitat groups help veterans with home repairs and home buying. Call your local Habitat office to ask.

  4. Step 4: Rebuilding Together

This national nonprofit does free repairs for low-income homeowners, including many veterans.

  5. Step 5: Know how company programs work

The Home Depot Foundation does not take applications from people. It pays nonprofits like these to do the work. Apply through the nonprofit.

Ask for a written plan and price before work starts. Real nonprofit programs will not ask you to pay up front.
