How to get mental health care, including Vet Centers

Stress, sleep problems, sadness, anger, and PTSD are common after service. Help is available, and some of it does not need VA enrollment.

What you may need

  • Nothing to get started. Just a phone.

Steps

  1. Step 1: If you are in crisis, call now

Dial 988, then Press 1, or text 838255. It is free, private, and open 24/7. You do not need VA benefits.

  2. Step 2: Ask for same-day help at a VA medical center

VA medical centers offer same-day mental health care for veterans who need it. Walk in or call.

  3. Step 3: Try a Vet Center

Vet Centers are small, local offices that give free, private counseling. They serve combat veterans, survivors of military sexual trauma, and others. You do not need to be enrolled in VA health care.

  4. Step 4: Ask about care for your family

Vet Centers can also offer counseling to family members to help with a veteran’s readjustment.

Even with an other-than-honorable discharge, you may be able to get some mental health care. Ask.
