How to get help after military sexual trauma (MST)

Military sexual trauma (MST) means sexual assault or harassment during service. The VA offers free care for MST to both women and men.

What you may need

  • Nothing. You do not need proof or a police report to get care.

Steps

  1. Step 1: Know that care is free

MST-related care is free. You may get it even if you cannot get other VA care. You do not need to have reported it while serving.

  2. Step 2: Ask for the MST Coordinator

Every VA health system has an MST Coordinator. They help you find care and answer questions privately.

  3. Step 3: Or start at a Vet Center

Vet Centers offer free, private counseling for MST survivors, close to home.

  4. Step 4: Learn about benefits

If MST caused a health condition, you may also qualify for disability pay. A free VSO can help you with the claim.

You can ask for a provider of a certain gender. Just tell the staff.
