How to solve a problem with your VA care

If you have a problem with an appointment, a bill, or how you were treated, there are people whose job is to help fix it.

What you may need

  • The date and place of the problem
  • Names of staff, if you know them
  • Any letters or bills

Steps

  1. Step 1: Talk to your care team first

Many problems can be fixed fast by your provider or the clinic manager. Ask them directly.

  2. Step 2: Ask for a Patient Advocate

Every VA medical center has Patient Advocates. They listen to your concern, look into it, and help find a fix.

  3. Step 3: Write down what happened

Keep notes with dates, names, and what was said. This helps the advocate help you.

  4. Step 4: Call the VA hotline if it is still not fixed

The White House VA Hotline is answered 24/7 by VA staff. They can send your concern to the right office.

Staying polite but firm usually gets the best result. You have a right to good care.
